Urinetown the Musical “What kind of musical is this?!” So asks the character Little Sally as the plot of “Urinetown” takes another unexpected turn. Set in a town suffering severe water restrictions due to a long drought, "Urinetown" is a satirical musical comedy which has all the usual ingredients of good versus evil, love, power and rebellion. Money-hungry big corporations, corrupt officials, populism and even musical theatre itself are all in the firing line.
Premiering on Broadway in 2001, it has won three Tony Awards (including Best Musical Score and Best Book in a musical) and the professional cast alumni includes David Campbell, Lisa McCune, Shane Bourne and Hunter Foster. The music includes gospel, jazz, rhythm and swing, as well as big ensemble numbers that give a nudge and wink to larger musicals such as Les Misérables.
As you would expect from a show that began life at a fringe festival, “Urinetown” has a creative set and characters that are more Gotham City than Disney, some of whom have become annual fixtures at Actors Equity fundraisers. Themes of environmental responsibility, popular government and social justice as well as its catchy music have made the show popular among high schools and amateur theatre companies worldwide.
This production is directed by Airell Hodgkinson (ALOTCo’s “Monty Python’s Spamalot” and “Little Shop of Horrors") with talented local cast and musicians starring in each lively performance.
